Zeri... is much more than just snow

Discovering Zeri’s charming countryside and exuberant nature

Trekking
Trekking enthusiasts will discover that Zeri’s valleys have not only an unspoiled nature but also ancient landscapes with itineraries which, down the centuries, have seen the passage of pilgrims and merchants. Zeri is part of the Lunigiana trekking circuit which is divided into fourteen main stages and has three variants. The landscape varies constantly, allowing trekkers to discover Zeri’s charming countryside and exuberant nature.
And now it’s time to put your rucksack on your back and set off. And have a great journey!

Itinerary. The Upper Via dei Monti Liguri
The Passo Due Santi Pass has become an important stage on this itinerary called the Upper Via dei Monti Liguri Trail which has, in turn, become a stage of the N° 1 European Trail.
This trail was inaugurated in Costanza in 1972, and is very popular with excursionists from all over Europe. Starting from the Baltic Sea, and crossing the splendid countryside of Germany and Switzerland towards the St. Gottard Pass excursionists arrive in Italy and, crossing the Ticino Park, the trail comes to the Apennines.
It then makes its way up the Scrivia Valley and, having abandoned the old trail which made its way down to Genoa and is now one of the variants, it turns towards Tuscany, following the Upper Via dei Monti Liguri Trail from the Praglia Plains to the Passo Due Santi Pass where is joins the G.E.A. (Grande Escursione Appenninica) trail.
The stunning vista which meets the eye of the trekking enthusiast taking in the green Po valleys and the deep blue Ligurian Sea, is quite incomparable.
Excursions on the Upper Via dei Monti Liguri Trail can last a few days or a few hours, and allow excursionists to spend time in the many little towns, villages and passes on the way. The trails are well traced and signposted with the typical white and red signposts with the AV central white band.

Mountain Biking
There are numerous mountain bike itineraries, from those indicated for trekkers to those uniting the various Zeri valleys.
The challenge is a fascinating one and even the most expert mountain bikers will be amazed by the unspoiled nature and wonderful landscapes they encounter around every corner.
But just a word of warning: don’t worry if a herd of sheep or of cows crosses your path. We are in Zeri, where the flora and fauna are free to grow and move around undisturbed…..

Road itinerary for mountain bikes – the Passo Due Santi Pass Trail
Total Km. 55,1
Maximum altitude: Mt. 1.392 asl. (P.so dei Due Santi)
Duration: 4 hours
This is a difficult itinerary and therefore should not be underestimated. Not advised for mountain bikers who are not in excellent form.

Start: Pontremoli
Finish: Pontremoli

Leaving behind the town of Pontremoli take the road for Arzelato and the Pradalinara meadows, which is very steep. Having left Pradalinara behind head for Coloretta (Zeri) descending through the town of Dolce. Leaving Coloretta behind head in the direction of Patigno where the climb becomes steep and difficult. Having passed Patigno cross the Val di Termine valley and, following the signposts, take the right hand road which will bring you to the Passo Due Santi Pass.
The inclination here is 11.5% and so getting to the Pass is tiring and difficult, but if you do make it, then enjoy a well-deserved break at the Due Santi Pass refuge.
The return is downhill towards Pontremoli along the outbound road.
Have a great ride!

Riding
In Zeri, as in all mountainous areas, the horse has always been a friend of the farmer. A partnership which was forged by toiling in the fields and transporting wood. The typical local race is the Bardigiano, which is of medium height. It is a robust and low animal with sturdy limbs, a thick mane and wide back and it has always been suited to living and working in the mountainous Apennine areas.

The Horse Fair and Bardigiano Horse Show which is held the last Sunday in August each year in Adelano is dedicated to the local Bardigiano horse. There are many itineraries for riding enthusiasts in the Zeri area and, given the reliability and versatility of the Bargiano, there are numerous exciting itineraries to choose from.
Riding enthusiasts, in contact with nature and discovering hidden and steep trails will find the Bargiano horse is a wonderful companion just as he has always been for local farmers.

Fishing
There are many sparkling rivers and fresh-water torrents in Zeri’s valleys, including the Teglia Torrent which crosses the Valle di Rossano valley, the Gordana Torrent in Noce and the Cedolo and Moriccio canals to mention just a few where it is possible to go fishing for the delicious fairo trout and the vairone which is a species of pike. Here fishermen will delight in the surroundings disturbed only by the sounds of the area’s uncontaminated nature and breathtaking silence.
